Josepha (Joyce) Hooft Overdiek, 86, passed away Wednesday, 9 January at the McKay-Dee Hospital emergency room surrounded by many loved ones, after a brief illness. She was born 10 April 1932 in Amsterdam, Holland, a daughter of Pieter Hooft and Ceslawa Staszak.
She married Robert Overdiek on 23 January 1951, in Amsterdam. He died in 1975.
They both lived through WWII as young teenagers in Amsterdam. They emigrated to the U.S. in 1951. She resided in Ogden the past 67 years. She was so proud to become a naturalized U.S. citizen.
Joyce was a self-made woman, owning and running two downtown Ogden businesses with her husband and then, after his early passing, working as a clerk and retiring in 1989 from Hill AFB.
She enjoyed crocheting (making blankets for each grandkid and great-grandkid) and gardening, and water aerobics with her friends at the Ben Lomond Pool. She was active and always full of life. She was passionate about birds, belonging to the Wasatch Audubon Society and serving as a hospitality specialist and was their Hospitality Committee Chairperson as well as volunteering for over 20 years at the Ogden Nature Center, including visiting schools and even the Utah State capitol to give demonstrations on birds. Hummingbirds, a quail covey, and all birds had a welcome haven at her homes bird-friendly environment. She had her own beautiful "secret garden" in the back and loved caring for any flowering vegetation and was known for her beautiful tulips and roses. Of course, she was Dutch. Joyce loved camping and fishing. She loved to see things and she was a world traveler, visiting all the countries of Western Europe, Australia, China, Africa, Egypt, Peru, the Galapagos Islands, much of the U.S. and more.
Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, oldest daughter Marion, parents, and one sister Elizabeth Touw (Amsterdam).
She is survived by her son Ronald, Ogden; and daughters, Joyce (Randy), Huntsville and Jeanette (John), North Ogden; a sister, Maria; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was the longtime matriarch of the family and will be greatly missed by them and her many friends.
