Kathryn Abbott DyeKathryn Abbott Dye passed away of natural causes on Feb 3 rd 2013. Born in Ogden Utah on April 6th 1922 to George Lowe and Maude Hayes Abbott, she married Richard Scott Dye on April30th 1946 who was her constant companion for the next 67 years until Scotts death in Jan of 2012. She was raised in Ogden graduating from Ogden High School in 1940. She went on to get an eclectic collage education attending Stephens Collage, the University of Washington, a semester in Mexico City, and returned to get a Bachelors degree at the University of Utah. After her marriage to Scott , they settled in Ogden and began raising their 3 children. Katie was never a person to sit still too long. In addition to her children, she had several careers including creating and running a gift shop at the family store L.R.Samuels. When the family business was later sold she turned her attention to real estate, becoming an agent for the Wardley group which lasted over 15 years. At the same time, she always remained committed to helping the community. She volunteered for the Red Cross, the Junior League of Ogden and the Ogden Symphony as well as devoting time to raise funds or other organizations. In 1977 she was appointed to the Ogden City Planning commission becoming the chairwoman in 1980. During her tenure she was instrumental in forcing developers to include landscaping and open green space to their design, something not ordinarily required in Ogden at the time. She later became very involved in the Childrens Justice Center, serving on the Board of Directors and working tirelessly to help raise funds. Katie and her husband Scott were always active and enjoyed hiking, camping, picnics, anything outdoors. They were avid skiers starting at Snow Basin when it opened in the 1940s, and they both continued to ski well into their late 80s. They loved travel which took them to Europe, Russia, Asia, the Caribbean and South America. As strong supporters of the Utah Winter Olympics, they were part of the Utah Olympic delegation that traveled to Birmingham, England for the 1998 bid, and Budapest to secure the successful 2002 bid.She is survived by her three children: Richard "Rad" Abbott Dye (Kelly), Steven Scott Dye (Kellie) and Susan Cottam (Mike), her three grandchildren: Kathryn Ann Dye (Ben Sitton), Anthony Scott Dye, and Kyle Scott Cottam as well as her best friend Rosanne King who she has known since age 4 and was considered like a sister. The family would also like to thank Jean Hacheister for her over 25 years of help and devotion. She was preceded by her Brother James Abbott and her Husband Richard Scott Dye.There will be a celebration of life for Katie at the Eccles Community Art Center Saturday Feb 9th from 3pm to 6pm.
