Kenneth Fernelius Stuart passed away early October 19th. He was born September 5, 1926 to Claude Elliot and Ellen Fredricka Fernelius in Uintah, Utah. He was a lifetime of Uintah. He married Marion Wolthuis on May 22, 1952 in the Logan LDS Temple. They are the parents of five sons; Ron (Chris), Greg (Shirley), Jeff (Kathy), Brent (Abby), and Rich (Andrea), grandparents of 20 and great grandparents of 22. Ken was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served as an Aaronic Priesthood quorum advisor, Scoutmaster, Sunday school teacher, home teacher, high priest group leader, stake and regional athletic director and temple worker. He graduated from Weber High School. He served in the US Army and spent time in Europe during World War II. He was a member of the US Army Reserve for 37 years, and mentored many during that period. His primary career was with the US Postal Service and retired as the Postmaster in Layton, UT. He loved working for the Post Office and took pride in his work. Ken was an excellent athlete and excelled at all sports especially baseball and softball. He loved golf and the opportunity it provided for him to spend time with his sons and friends. He spent countless hours coaching and teaching his sons and other young men in baseball, basketball, football, and volleyball. He was well known as a referee and umpire and called thousands of baseball, softball, basketball, football and volleyball games ranging from youth leagues, church, recreation, junior high, high school and even college. Almost everyone who ever played one of these sports in the Ogden area had one of their games officiated by Ken. He made many friends because of his sports affiliations. Ken also loved gardening. He took great pride in his garden and orchard and shared his abundance of produce with neighbors and friends. Most importantly, his garden was a place to teach his sons and grandchildren the value of work and he spent many hours working side by side with them. His greatest joy was his family. He had great love for his wife and appreciation of her talents. He loved time with his sons and their families and supported them at important events throughout their lives. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, his sons and their wives, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and two sisters, Ila Jean Carter and JoAnnn Robinson, and one brother, Dick Brown. He is preceded in death by his parents, five sisters, Elinor Gardner, Verda Gardner, Lillian Knudsen, Marjorie Hatch, Doris McKwen, and three brothers, Elliott, Darrell and David. Kens family would like to extend a special thanks to Monica Swander for her tender care of Ken over the past year as his health declined. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, October 27, 2014 at the LDS Chapel in Uintah (6650 South 1775 East). A viewing will be held at the Uintah Chapel Sunday, October 26th from 6:00-8:00 pm and Monday from 9:45-10:45 am.
