L. Steven Damon passed away on Wednesday, July 10, 2013, at his home in Riverdale, Utah. He was 81 years of age. He was born Dec. 18, 1931, in Seal Harbor, Maine, a son of Waldo and Eleanor Damon. Steve attended schools in Mount Desert, Maine; Hartford, Conn.; Indiana Technical College in Fort Wayne, Ind.; and Boston University in Boston, Mass. Oct. 21, 1951, he married Ruth Frazier. They had three children: Frederick, Steven and Lauri. Steve and Ruth were later divorced. During the Korean War, Steves military services included working as an aircraft mechanic for four years at U.S. Air Force bases in Texas and Korea. Following his Air Force service, he served over three years aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Independence as a civilian tech working in the field of aircraft systems and electronics. He retired after 30 years of government service. On Jan. 3, 1996, in Mesa, Ariz., Steve married Madelon Forest, daughter of Helen Springer McCain. They returned to Utah to live in their homes at Clearfield, Washington Terrace and Riverdale. Steve worked part-time jobs in private industry for 12 years prior to his final retirement. They also enjoyed winter months at their home in Yuma, Ariz. Steve was known for his sense of humor and exuberant personality. He was very handy and enjoyed working around the house, and volunteered his skills at church and other places. Steve visited all the states, as well as Mexico and China, and enjoyed the outdoors and square dancing. He loved his family and his church family. Steve and Madelon were members of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Bountiful and Ogden. Steve was a member of Unity Lodge, F. Scottish Rite; El Kalah Temple; Shriners A.A.O., N.M.S., S.L.C. He was a member of Miriam Chapter #14, Eastern Star. He served in his church on the Board of Directors and Social Action. Steve is survived by his wife, Madelon Forest; two sons, Frederick Maxwell (Rhett) and Steven Wayne (Marlene); one daughter, Lauri Damon Smith (Bill); a mother-in-law, Helen Kathleen McCain; and many grandchildren, step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Mack, and sister, Charlotte. A Memorial Service with Masonic and Military Honors will be held at Congregational United Church of Christ, 3350 Harrison Blvd., at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 18, with Rev. Gage Church officiating. A luncheon will follow. A private family inurnment will follow at Leavitts Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Shriners Hospitals for Children in Salt Lake City.
