Larry William Phillips, who was dearly loved, passed away on May 2, 2013. Larry was born on the Osage Cherokee Reservation on July 29, 1955 to a white father and an American Indian mother. He was raised on the reservation until being rescued by DFS after six or eight years and subsequently placed in an orphanage. Not many could have survived as well as Larry did in this life, and he was later adopted by Troy and Gladys Phillips.Larry grew up and served honorably in Vietnam with the United States Marine Corps, and after two tours of duty was awarded two purple hearts and a bronze star. Upon his return from Vietnam he tried many occupations -among them police officer and truck driver, and struggled with alcoholism. Eventually, his wandering spirit led him to Penny Fleming, "the best thing that ever happened to him" and he was inspired to sober up. He has been free from alcohol for twenty two years. he prided himself on doing the very best he could in everything, whether it was in his professional life or helping friends, family, and strangers. Those who knew him best loved him most.He married Penny on April 27, 1990 and together they raised two children - Travis and Chase Phillips. He was very proud of his family and told all who would listen to him how blessed hea was. In recent years, his health began to fail him and he struggled with cancer, COPD, and diabetes until on May 2nd, he took his own life. Survivors include his wife Penny, children Travis (Ashlee) and Chase. Among other survivors are his sister Eula Huston, nephew Sam Huston, niece Cheri Ezzell, Jim and Judy Fleming, Jim and Mindy Fleming, Brandon and Nicole Fleming, Barbara and Tom Vandenberg, and his very good friend Nancy Fleming. Larry is preceded in death by his parents, Troy and Gladys Phillips."What we have once enjoyed we can never lose. All that we love becomes a part of us." This means you, Larry. We love you very much!Memorial services will be Wednesday May 15, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Leavitts Mortuary, 836 36th Street in Ogden. Military Honor Guard will give a final salute.
