Obituary

Born Under A Lucky Star Our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother was born on March 5, 1920 in Osterode am Harz, Germany to Karl Friedrich and Friedel Feurerriegel Kratz. She passed away peacefully on October 25, 2013 in Ogden, Utah. Her journey had many stops along the way. Much of her youth was spent in Lodz, Poland where her grandparents owned a woolen mill. At the end of World War II she fled Poland just before the Russians invaded and became a refugee in her native Germany. Because of her ability to speak German, Polish, Russian and English she found employment as an interpreter for American officers in Bavaria. It was then she met Col. Ward Reid Betz and soon became a war bride". At the age of 31, she first stepped foot on American soil. The family lived in Dayton, Ohio; Newfoundland, Canada and Colorado Springs before making their final move to Ogden, Utah in 1962. She loved to travel and spent many summers in Europe visiting her friends and relatives. Her love of the arts led her to become active with the Eccles Art Center and the Ogden Opera Guild. In her later years she fostered several dogs and became a member of the Intermountain Animal Therapy group, visiting shut-ins in various facilities around Weber County with her dog, Muschka. She is survived by her children: Halina (Rick) Hansaker of Overland Park, Kansas; Allan Betz of Ogden; Victoria Betz of Ogden and Frederick (KyAnn) Betz of Layton, seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Reid Betz. The family wishes to thank the staff of Manor Care who took such good care of her over the last few years. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, November 2 at 11:00 am at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Ogden, 23rd and Madison. She would have been delight to know that in lieu of flowers, friends donated to the animal shelter of their choice. Auf Wiedersehen, Oma!
