Mary Ruth Davis, long time resident of Ogden Utah, passed away at home, after a brief battle with cancer, on Saturday, September 30th. She was surrounded by her family. Mary was born in 1929, at home, on a tobacco farm in Deep Run, North Carolina to Earnest and Nora Smith. Years later she met and married Oval W. Davis. They soon moved to Ogden Utah, where they built a home and then a family of four children: Owen, Bill, Marilyn, and Ray. Mary had a successful career with the Safeway Grocery store in Ogden. She worked for 30 years in the meat department where she enjoyed her work as well as her fellow workers. Mary was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was an avid fan of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and never missed an opportunity to listen to them. She also enjoyed traveling and exploring the world with her husband, always returning with bags of memorabilia for herself, her friends and her family. Mary enjoyed cooking, especially the hometown recipes from her childhood in North Carolina. Her kitchen artistry delighted her children and grandchildren. Mary was a kind-hearted woman who gave of her time and possessions to family and friends at the drop of a hat. She would never turn away an open hand and has often served as a surrogate mother to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Marys home was always the center of every holiday, often having two trees for Christmas; one for the upstairs living room for the adults gifts and a tree for the grandkids in the downstairs living room. Presents were stacked far and wide. Mary would never smile for photos because she said she never felt beautiful. Others who knew her would say she is one of the most beautiful women theyve ever met, both on the outside and on the inside. She was a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and a friend. She will be missed by all who knew her. Mary is survived by her two sons, William Davis and Ray Davis as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
