Mercedes Janice Sorenson Sorensen's Obituary

Mercedes Budge Sorensen (Mercy), 89, left this world peacefully, surrounded by family at her son Matts home in Scottsdale, Arizona. Mercy was born in Koosharem, Utah to Soren Marinus Sorenson and Sarah Estella Manwill. She was the youngest of 12 children. Mercy loved growing up on their family farm where there was no electricity or plumbing and shared many fun and interesting small-town stories. She attended school at the little Koosharem school house, where she had seven or eight classmates, which became very close friends for life. Since the school only taught through the 10th grade, she had to leave home at age 16, and moved to Richfield where she graduated from Richfield H.S.. After graduation, she moved to Provo and attended BYU her freshman year, where she also made many lifelong friends and later received a teaching certificate. She was approved at the age of 19 to go on an LDS mission to the Central States mission, which included Missouri-Arkansas. This is where she first met Merrill S. Budge, while she was all dressed up and busy milking a cow. They fell in love and were married September 17, 1948. They moved to Provo, where they worked and attended BYU. Their early life together was spent in UtahValley, where they had four children, Sarah, Cynthia, Merrill and Matthew. After graduation, they moved to Paris, Idaho, where Merrill taught seminary. Soon thereafter, they returned to Salt Lake City and later settled in Ogden. They shared a good life for 22 years while raising four children. Mercy had taught herself to sew at the age of 16, and became an amazing seam-stress, sewing beautiful clothes for herself and her children. Merrill passed away in Ogden, Utah on June 18, 1970. On January 4, 1971, she married the second great love of her life Arthur W. Sorensen Jr.. This marriage brought two families together into a new and expanded loving family, where she became the Mother to his four children Brent, Cheryl, Joy and Paul, and he became the father to hers. At that time, they also brought two native-American children, Carl Eldridge and Lorenzo Mike, into their loving home. Mercy and Artie enjoyed having people spend time at their home sharing countless meals. Mercy loved to decorate and redecorate, and soon had Arthur renovating their home on Wilson Lane. Later, and with the help of the entire extended family, they designed and built a new home in what became West Haven, Utah. They affectionately called their home the "Sorensen Hotel". Everyone was welcome and accepted with unconditional love. They shared 41 wonderful years together until Arthur passed away March 6, 2012. She was a loving and gentle spirit in all of our lives, and will be so greatly missed. Mercys surviving children are Sarah Graham, Merrill Budge and Matthew Budge. From Arthurs side are Brent Sorensen, Cheryl (Dave) Chambers, Joy (Steve) Wise, and Paul (Jayne) Sorensen. Mercy has 26 grandchildren, 60 great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter Cynthia Petersen, granddaughter JoDee Petersen and sons in law James Petersen and Johnny Graham.
