Nina M. Carter

Nina M. Carter, 91, of Rexburg, Idaho, our beloved mother and grandmother passed away at her home surrounded by family on Sun, Feb 19, 2023.  She was born in 1932 in Monte Vista, CO to William H and Marie Coursey Grantham.  Her younger school years were spent in Wyoming and Utah.  During her teenage years she was a serious student, too serious, according to her mother.  Nina was encouraged to skip school once in a while and her mother would happily write her an excuse.  She graduated from High School in 1950, in Medford, OR and attended one year at BYU.

In 1953 she married Thomas B. Carter in the Salt Lake Temple; the marriage lasted 21 years, during which time they were blessed with three sons and three daughters.  They were the joy of her life.

Later, with great effort and 5am drives to Pocatello, as well as working part-time and being a full-time mother, Nina earned her teaching degree from Idaho State University.  Nina taught 6th grade in Rexburg for 19 years, never giving in to the temptation of torture or something worse.

Nina served in numerous callings in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  She taught early morning seminary, served a full-time mission as a Family History missionary in Salt Lake City and was diligent in teaching her children gospel principles.  More importantly, she led a gospel-centered life by example.

Most important in Nina’s life was her family, her membership in the church, her love of service and her abiding love of the Savior.  She loved Family History, friends, reading, traveling, antiques, collecting vintage glass, teaching, playing card games with her family  AND loved spoiling her grandchildren.

If you did not know her well you might not be aware of her quiet, dry sense of humor and the wicked delight she took in winning previously-mentioned card games.  When the game wasn’t going her way she could be heard muttering, “NUTS.”

Nina is survived by her loving and caring six children: Laura White, Tom Carter, Lesley Carter, Linda Carter, Paul Carter (Jo Lynn), Brian Carter (Heather), as well as 23 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.

Nina is preceded in death by her parents, her sister, and her brother.
