Norma Dale Draughn, 77, passed away June 12, 2016 in Layton, Utah due to complications from surgery. She was born November 2, 1938 to Sidney Allen Draughn and Katherine Maybel Kingsbury in Mt. Airy, Surry County, North Carolina. She graduated from Mt. Airy High School and then attended Brigham Young University. Norma was a beloved teacher for 40 years in the Surry County Schools. She taught for 39 years at East Surry High School. She taught English, French, Creative Writing and Journalism to 100s of students over multiple generations of Surry County youth. By the time she retired she was teaching the grandchildren of some of her original students. She received many awards and recognitions on both county and state levels for her dedication to teaching. Norma was active in the LDS faith and spent many years leading youth groups and religious camps. She loved music and led her church choir. Though she never married, she was a 2nd mom to her sisters seven children, 16 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was a positive and motivating influence in the lives of many. She will be greatly missed. Norma is survived by her sister, Nancy Louise Jennings; Helen Self, Karl Jennings, Leif and Kate Summerhays, David and Brittany Jennings, Donald and Bergetta Jennings, Valerie and Robert Edwards and Daniel and Angelita Jennings who all consider her mom 16 great nieces and nephews; nine great-great nieces and nephews. Norma is preceded in death by her parents. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, June 17, 2016 at 12:00 noon at the Clearfield 22nd Ward Chapel, 1425 West 700 South, Syracuse, Utah. A Viewing will be on Thursday, June 16, 2016 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Ward Chapel. Friends may also visit with the family prior to services from 11:00 to 11:45 am.
