Opal Charolene "Peggy" Fisher Hill Wells

Opal Charolene Fisher Hill Wells of South Weber, Utah passed away peacefully at the amazing age of 97, on July 8, 2023. “Peggy” as she was lovingly called by her Grandma Stoddard, was born in Ogden, Utah on October 10, 1925, to Bruce Leo Fisher and Lydia Lovina Stoddard. She was the oldest and only girl of 5 siblings. She was raised in Clearfield, UT on her family’s sugar beet farm during the summer and spent the winters in Crestline, California, where her favorite aunts, Wanda and Pearl were extras in movies.

In 1943, Peggy graduated from Davis High School and attended Weber State College for a short time. She also began working at Hill Airforce Base and then Barlow’s Furniture and Grocery.

In 1944 she met her first love, John Hill. They were married on June 24, 1945 in Fort Worth, Texas before he was deployed as a paratrooper in the US Army and stationed in Benning, GA. Peggy moved to South Weber, Utah where she lived on her beloved farm and old mountain for 77 years. John and Peggy went on to have 5 children together, Patricia Ann, Ramona, Roland, Mary Kate and Joe.  They were married for 16 years before John was tragically killed in an accident in December of 1961.

Peggy met Charles Douglas Wells in 1963 and they were married on February 14, 1964. On November 18, 1966 they were sealed for all time and entirety in the Salt Lake City Temple. Doug and Peggy had one child together, Paul Douglas Wells. They were married for 50 years before Doug’s passing in 2014.

Peggy was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She loved attending the South Weber Ladies Club and the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers meetings, or as she called it, “The Old Hens Club”, where she had been a member since 1958.

In 1977 she started working for Nancy Long, who became her lifelong best friend and chosen sister at The Wood House in Ogden, Utah. She eventually transferred to Gardner Village in West Jordan, where she was the manager and master decorator of Country Furniture until 1991.  Peggy had an amazing gift for decorating and creating floral arrangements. She took pride in her home and mountain farm in South Weber. Everything was always in pristine and beautiful condition. Peggy’s life moto was “Never Quit, Get It Done!” She loved to serve those around her, whether it was pulling weeds, baking, or chasing kids, grandkids and all their friends. She could outwork anyone and was always the last to quit.

Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, husbands, John and Doug, and 3 children, Patricia Ann Neilsen, Roland Hill, and Joe Hill.

She is survived by her children, Ramona Lower, Dorothy Hill, Mary Kate Athay (Robert Valdez), Paul Wells (Terri), 12 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, close friend, Geri Daines, and many others who knew her as Grandma Peggy. Our family would like to thank Charles and Kathy Athay for the amazing care, support and love they provided Peggy in her final weeks.

A Celebration will be held on Thursday, July 20, 2023 at the South Weber 5th Ward building at 2620 East 8200 South, South Weber, UT, across from her beloved mountain. Visitation will take place on Thursday, July 20 from 10-11:30 am, followed by funeral services at 12:00 pm. Graveside services to follow at the Uintah Cemetery, 1500 East 6450 South, Uintah, UT.
