Orla M. ("Lucky") Kapanka, daughter of E. Catherine and Sidney S. Smith passed away at her home on May 24, 2016. She was 92 years old.
Orla was raised in Coalville, UT and attended Weber State College in Ogden after graduation from North Summit High School in 1941. She then went to work at Hill Field as a secretary, then joined the WWII war effort at the Office of Flight Safety at the Pentagon. After the war ended in 1945 she became an air hostess for Trans World Airlines (TWA) and began flying internationally shortly thereafter. She left TWA in 1951 to marry sea Capt. Louis J. Kapanka and raise a family. She maintained her flying associations by becoming a proud life-long member of Clipped Wings, serving as its International President from 1967- 1969.
Orla enjoyed traveling and frequently accompanied her family on domestic and international trips. She also volunteered with the American Red Cross, Junior Achievement, the Centerport Yacht Club on Long Island, NY where she and her family lived, as well as many other social and charitable organizations, always serving in leadership roles. In her free time, she also worked as a secretary and bookkeeper outside the home.
Orla was, above all else, devoted to her husband and three children. Her love was evidenced by her encouragement and sacrifice and her teaching of important values by word and example. She always felt that her greatest achievement was the family she raised and who will miss her dearly.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband, Lou, and four siblings: Renee, Norma Jean, Glen and Kaye.
She is survived by two sons, Frederic Kapanka, an educator in Houston, TX; William Kapanka, a pharmacist in Pensacola, FL; a daughter, Heidi Kapanka, an Emergency Physician, in Ogden, UT; two brothers, Sidney S. Smith of Bountiful, UT and Tom Smith of Logan, UT; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews and their families.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Dignity Hospice for the compassionate care Orla received and the many relatives and friends who helped serve her needs with love and concern just before her passing.
