Patricia (Pat) Shannon Grimm, long time resident of Sunset, Utah, passed peacefully away in Mesa, Arizona, March 24, 2011 of natural causes. Patricia was born on February 4, 1925 in St. Anthony, ID to Claud Clinton and Charlotte Long Shannon. She spent the first nine years of her life in the small town of Victor, Idaho where her father was a district forest ranger. He died when she was nine, and her family then moved, first, to Tuttle, Oklahoma and then to Emmett, Idaho where she attended school, graduating from Emmett High School in 1943. She met her husband, Robert while he was stationed at Gowen Field at a dance in Emmett. It was love at first sight, and when he returned from serving in the India/China/Burma theater, they were married in Saratoga, Wyoming on October 11, 1945. They originally settled in Cheyenne, Wyoming where their two daughters, Janice and Kathryn were born. In 1952 they moved to Sunset, Utah where Patricia lived until April of 2010 when she moved to Mesa, AZ to be closer to her daughter, Kathryn. Pat worked as the secretary of Sunset Elementary School for many years and loved her time there with the students and faculty. Pat and her family loved camping in the Uintas and exploring southern Utah. She was a fun and imaginative mother who instilled in her daughters a lifelong love of reading. From an early age, Pat displayed a true talent for writing. She was an active member of the Utah State Poetry Society and was named Poet of the Year in 1985 with the publication of her book, Timepiece. She won numerous prizes both locally and nationally for her poetry. Her poems were selected for several anthologies, including A Great and Terrible Beauty, Comstock Review, and The New England Anthology of Writers. For many years she met twice of month with her beloved Amuse writing group, a group of poets and friends she held very dear to her heart. Besides her talent for poetry, she was a superb china painter. She also loved family history and gardening. All of the family loved spending time at the cabin Pat and Bob built near Smith and Morehouse Reservoir. After she and Bob retired, they enjoyed traveling with their dear friends to the Northwest and, especially, enjoyed their time as "snowbirds" in the Southwest. Pat and Bob were thrilled to visit their Korean family twice and to see their granddaughter Karen and her family in England. But above all, Pat loved her husband, daughters, grandchildren, great grandchildren, her extended family, and her friends. She gave devoted, tender care to Bob through his final struggle with cancer. He passed away January 31, 2002. She was a mentor to many, a great listener, and a devoted friend. She had a quiet faith in God and in His Son, Jesus Christ that carried her through many difficult times. Her family and friends will miss her great sense of humor, her wisdom, receiving letters from her, her hugs, and her lemon meringue pie. She is survived by her daughters, Janice (Elwyn) Peterson of Owatonna, MN, and Kathryn (Tyler) Clement of Mesa, AZ; her nephews who she viewed as sons, Robert (Carol) Messinger of Summerville, OR and Richard (Kathleen) Messinger of Yuma, AZ, nine grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren. She is also survived by her loving Korean family, Hyunsoo (Joon) Suk and their three daughters. She is predeceased by her husband, Bob, and her sister, Roberta Anderson.
