Pearce Leonard (Jack) Hines, 90 years old, died Sunday morning, December 4, 2011, at his home. He was born May 5, 1921, on a homestead in Cedarvale, New Mexico to James W. and Effie Dunn Hines. When Jack was 3, the family relocated to Lometa, Texas where they worked hard at farming and ranching. At age 19, he joined the Army for a ride that would ultimately take him to the 101st Airborne Division in WWII. He participated in Operation Market Garden, the Battle of the Bulge, and a skirmish in Belgium where in January 1945 a German tank shell took his right arm. He recovered at Bushnell Army Hospital in Brigham City where he met and soon married Evelyn (Pete) Petersen. Together they raised a family in Ogden: Carol Ann (James) Morrow of Orem, Brad (Carol) Hines of Reno, Judy (Russ) Latherow of Ogden, Bret (Debbie) Hines of South Ogden, ten grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.Jack retired from Hill Air Force Base in 1984.Jack was preceded in death by his wife, Pete, of 63 years; his grandson, James Andrew Hines, three brothers, two sisters, and many, many friends.If you did not know Jack, you missed out. If you did, you will never forget him.A Memorial Service will be held Thursday evening, December 8, 2011 at 6:00 p.m., at Leavitts Mortuary, 836 36th street in Ogden.
