Quentin Reuel Smelzer's Obituary

Quentin Reuel Smelzer, Jr., age 87 years, passed away peacefully at his home in Huntsville, Utah on Monday, August 7, 2017. He was born October 17, 1929, to Marie Goetz Smelzer and Quentin R. Smelzer in Buffalo, New York. Growing up in Williamsville, New York, he enjoyed playing on his high school basketball team. Quentin graduated from Canisius College in Buffalo and went on to serve in the United States Marine Corps as a Second Lieutenant, having trained at Quantico, Virginia and stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. After his time with the Marine Corps, he began a very successful business career in Chicago in the mid-1950s and then on to Wall Street in Manhattan in 1957 to work in the sugar industry. He married Sally Nolen and was later divorced. In 1968, Art Benning, owner of Ogden-based Amalgamated Sugar Co., asked who was the most talented sugar broker on Wall Street. Quentin was then hired to be Vice President of Marketing and moved to Utah. Quentin thrived in business. He was elected to the company board of directors in 1977. In 1984, he was promoted to Senior Vice President and stayed in that role until his retirement. He was honored with numerous business awards for his top sales skills. He enjoyed forming strong business relationships over rounds of golf at his favorite courses including Oakridge Country Club in Farmington, Utah, and Bob OLink Golf Club outside Chicago, Illinois. On November 30, 1973, Quentin married Margot Hedges Buckway, and they resided together in Huntsville for almost 44 years where he enjoyed playing golf, biking and skiing with his kids, walking his dogs, and driving his sports car. He had movie-star looks and Brooks Brothers style. Quentin promoted education for all his children and grandchildren, and more often than not, he was wearing their college shirts with pride. Even though no one attended Notre Dame, he was an ardent fan and enthusiastically cheered on The Fighting Irish. He was extremely kind and caring to Margot and all of their animals. He is survived by his devoted wife Margot, his children Quentin, Elizabeth, Mark, John, Caroline, Gregory, their spouses Susanne, Thomas, Eric, Nicole, Charlotte, and his grandchildren Geoffrey, Zachary, Brian, Brooke, Luke, Sadie, Elliott, Nolen, and Amelia. He is preceded in death by his parents, his beloved sister Marilyn, and his grandchildren Adam and Christian. The family would like to express their sincere and deepest thanks to Margots sister Georgeanne, and brother Ward, our close friend, Father Charles Cummins, our extended family, close neighbors, friends, the wonderful nursing assistants from Comfort Keepers, and the extremely competent team from Applegate Homecare and Hospice.
