Ray Sherwood Walker, our father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed peacefully on Friday, October 20, 2017. Ray was born November 9, 1922 in Hartford, Connecticut, the only child of John Spence and Etha Amelia Sherwood Walker. As a young man, Ray spent his summers working and playing on his grandfathers farm in Sussex, New Brunswick, with his cousin, Charlie. He developed a strong work ethic taught by his father and grandfathers which he instilled in his family. While attending school in Hartford on May 6, 1937, his class watched as the German airship Hindenburg flew over prior to the tragic accident at Lakehurst, NJ. This incident was frequently related to family and friends. At age 16, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCCs) learning to cut trees and build roads. Cutting trees and working with wood became a lifelong passion. He was content working with a piece of wood and sandpaper. He was given an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army after completing his service with the CCCs. He then joined the Navy prior to WWII and served aboard the USS New York, Independence, Intrepid, and Purdy. The latter three ships sustained heavy damage from kamikaze and torpedo attacks. He served in both the North Atlantic and Pacific Theaters. He received an honorable discharge from the Navy in 1948. After the war, Ray was stationed at the Clearfield Utah Navy Supply Depot. One day while hitchhiking, a lovely young lady offered him a ride. That ride lead to a life time commitment as Ray married Deyonne Kathryn Allgier on May 4, 1946. Their marriage started with a humble beginning, as their first home was in Deyonnes parents garage in Layton, UT. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on May 4, 1979. Ray drove long haul trucks for Slot Brothers Produce in Ogden, UT, King Trucking, hauling cattle, England Trucking and IML Freight, retiring from IML after 27 years. Following retirement, he enjoyed the farm life, raising a variety of animals with Deyonne in Huntsville, UT. Ray was preceded in death by his wife, Deyonne on September 12, 2002. He is survived by his children: Carson (Jim) McKay, Raelene Walker both of Huntsville, UT and Ray Sherwood Walker II (Sandy) of Mountain Green, UT. He has ten grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a son from a previous marriage, Richard (Sharon) Walker, Lakeville, MA, one grandchild and one great-grandchild. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at the George A. Wahlen Ogden Veterans Home, and all the caregivers that provided for dad. A viewing for friends and family will be held Wednesday, October 25, 2017 at 10:00 am to 11:30 am at the Huntsville Second Ward, 277 S. 7400 E., Huntsville, UT.
