Ronald J. Spud Ashby, age 80, passed away October 2, 2016 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Spud was born on August 1, 1936. He was a graduate of the Ogden High Class of 1954. He has been a lifelong resident of the Ogden area. Dad married his high school sweetheart, Jeri Averett on May 25, 1956 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church. They recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Spud and Jeri were traveling companions who spent their lives exploring and finding adventures in every corner of the world. He made friends easily with his quick wit and sense of humor. Spud retired from the Southern Pacific Railroad after 36 years. He was a member of the United Transportation Union, a private pilot, airboat captain, a member of the PBOE and a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and the occasional french fry or two. His greatest passions were traveling, woodworking and making his grandchildren laugh. Spud is survived by his wife, Jeri; three daughters, Teri Nimtz Ashby, Kim (Jerry) Ward, and Katie Neilson; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, June and Hetzler Ashby and son-in-law, Randy Neilson. A Viewing will be on Friday, October 7, 2016 from 6:00 to 7:30 pm at Leavitts Mortuary, 836 36th Street, Ogden, Utah. Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, October 8, 2016 at 12:00 noon at Holy Family Catholic Church, 1100 East 5550 South, Ogden, Utah. Interment at Ogden City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family is suggesting that donations be made to the Ronald McDonald House in the name of Ronald J. Ashby Golden West Credit Union account.
