Ruth Wagstaff Peterson

Ruth Wagstaff Peterson, 91 of Ogden, was called home by her Heavenly Father on Saturday, August 20, 2022. While napping, Ruth passed away peacefully from natural causes. Ruth was born July 22, 1931 in American Fork, Utah, to William Isaac Wagstaff and Hilda Payne Cordner Wagstaff.

Ruth graduated from American Fork High School in 1949. She attended the University of Utah for 2 years with the dream of becoming a teacher before meeting and marrying the love of her life Leland (Lee) Peterson. They were married and sealed together for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple on November 7, 1951. Ruth and Lee created a loving home and were blessed with five children…two daughters and three sons.

Ruth retired from Ogden City Schools as a Lynn Elementary School lunch room lady/cook. She loved children! Many times adults would stop her as she was shopping and say “I remember you! You were my lunch room lady!” She was also a seasonal worker at Internal Revenue Service Ogden. Ruth was an excellent seamstress. She loved to sew clothing for her children and her daughters’ dolls. Ruth and Lee had a huge garden over the years. Ruth preserved many different kinds of yummy fruits and vegetables for her family….pickles, sweet relish, strawberry jam, raspberry jam, pickled beets, chili sauce, and on and on. One year she canned 151 quarts of green beans! Ruth also loved to knit. She made endless pairs of knitted slippers for relatives and friends.

Ruth was a life-long member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in many callings throughout her life. She loved being a visiting teacher. However, as time flew by, Ruth began suffering from dementia and her activities started to diminish.

Ruth is survived by her daughter Carol (Michael) Wheeler, sons Clark (Jeanne) Peterson and Roger Peterson, 11 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband in 2012, her parents, brothers LeRoy (Claire) Cordner, Glen (Leanore) Wagstaff, Frank “Ike” (Nola) Wagstaff, her sisters Maisie (Ira) Newsome and Noreen (Paul) Taylor, her son Gary Peterson, her daughter Elaine (Nathan) Merrill, and one great granddaughter.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 30, at Leavitt’s Mortuary, 836 36th Street, Ogden, at 2:00 p.m. Friends may visit with family on Monday, August 29, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Tuesday 1:00 to 1:45 p.m. prior to the service.
