Ruth E. Stewart Powell August 16, 1924 April 25, 2017 With a touch of watermelon colored lipstick, a handkerchief, and a piece of candy in her pocket, Ruth Elizabeth Stewart Powell went home to be with her husband and parents on April 25, 2017. Ruth was born on August 16, 1924, to Earl Dewey Stewart and Nellie Mae Mc Donald in Lincoln, Nebraska. Ruth was the eldest of six children and helped raise her sibling while going to school. Ruth attended school in Lincoln and then attended Lincoln General receiving her degree in nursing in 1946. While attending nursing school she also served as a Cadet in the Army Nurse Corps. Ruth met her husband Ray M. Powell in Lincoln while attending Nursing School and then they married May 2, 1947 in Rays home town of El Reno, Oklahoma. They moved to California with their two children, Tom and Ruth and later had three more children. Ruth worked at Patton State Mental Hospital and then Saint Bernardines Hospital in San Bernardino. Ruth also served as a Reserve Police Officer for the County. In 1965 Ray was transferred to Ogden, Utah where Ruth worked at three local hospitals in the area, The Thomas D. Dee Memorial Hospital, Saint Benedicts Hospital, and retired from Hill Air Force Base Hospital. Ruth was a specialized nurse in several different fields such as a Coronary Care, Stroke Unit, and Obstetrics. While at Hill Air Force Base, Ruth helped deliver two of her grandchildren. Ruth was very active in the community and won several awards. Ruth was a President of The Utah Nurses Association, Past President of The Utah League of Women Voters and Past Auxiliary Mother of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles. She was also an active volunteer of Your Community Connection, where she won The Utah Governors Award for her service. Ruth also spent many years portraying Mrs. Claus alongside her husband Ray, as Mr. Claus. Ruth was the Hostess for The Leo Group Bus Tours. She always had a trip going somewhere, Reno, Wendover, or Laughlin for some fun. Ruth always had a hug or a friendly hello. Ruth never met a stranger, and was always first to say hello or to smile (while wearing a touch of lipstick) and greet someone. She enjoyed baking, canning and sewing. Ruth had a green thumb which everyone knew when they visited her home. She could grow anything from a clipping or a seed. Ruth talked to her plants and whistled for them and on occasion, you could hear the music from her harmonica or the organ throughout the house. She loved to play cards, and was also known to some of her family as Mrs. Hoyle, for her card expertise. Ruth and Ray spent many weekends at their cabin in Wheeler Canyon where their cabin was always filled with laughter, family, friends, cooking, cards, and music. She loved to dance and was an expert Polka Dancer with her partner in life, Ray. Ruth was loved by many; her kindness, honesty, and loving attitude were so admired. Friends were always welcome in her home and never left hungry. She always had a cookie, a piece of pie or some delicious leftover to offer. Ruth was also a published author of a childrens book The Flying Horse, many medical articles and a film on childbirth. Ruth was a member of the Trinity Presbyterian Church in Ogden and was a resident of Mountain Ridge Assisted Living for several years. Ruth is preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Donna Browning and Marjorie Wilkerson and her husband (Her Ray of Sunshine). They had been married for 67 years. Ruth is survived by her five children, Thomas R. Powell, Rocky Mount, North Carolina, Ruth Bourgoin (Mike) Riverside, CA., Suzan Garrett (Dana) Klamath Falls, OR., James W. Powell, Ogden, Utah, Carol Pinner (Thomas) Klamath Falls, OR. Ruth is also survived by her siblings William Stewart (Connie) Fairbanks, AK., Thomas Stewart (Jean) Riverside, CA., and Judy Davies-Lemon (Sam) Riverside, CA., Ruth had seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Saturday April 29, 2017 at 3:00PM at Leavitts Mortuary, 836 36th Street Ogden, UT 84403 Family will greet friends Friday evening April 28, 2017 from 6:00 8:00 PM and Saturday April 29, 2017 from 2:00 2:45 PM Interment in Leavitts Aultorest Memorial Park.
