Obituary

It is with deep sadness and love that we announce the passing of Thomas G. Russell, 71, on June 6, 2026, in Ogden, Utah.

Tom was born in Seattle, Washington, to Bill and Betty Russell. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose kindness, sense of adventure, and love for people left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.

He is survived by his loving wife, Shirleen Hales Russell; daughter, Alex Russell; son, William Russell; stepson, Monte Swapp (Lori), and grandsons Morgan and Ian Swapp; stepdaughter, Samantha Armbruster (Nick), and grandson Jack Armbruster; siblings Doug (Jodi), Jim (Erin), Terri Russell Bean (David), and John (Lisa), along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

During his 30-year career in the commercial linen business, Tom lived in Denver, Colorado; St. George, Utah; and Chicago, Illinois. Eventually, he moved to Utah to be closer to family, where he met the love of his life, Shirleen Hales. They were married in September 2020 and built a life filled with love, laughter, and adventure. Together they enjoyed weekly outdoor blues concerts, Sunday dinners with the grandkids, and road trips throughout the Northwest, Colorado, and Montana.

Among Tom and Shirleen’s favorite memories were their trips to the Caribbean and Maui, Hawaii, where Tom truly found his happy place — relaxing at the beach and floating in the ocean for hours.

Tom had a passion for sports and the outdoors. He was an avid skier and golfer and spent many years on the softball field. While living in Chicago, he became a lifelong Cubs fan and loved taking family and friends to Wrigley Field for the full Chicago experience, usually followed by dinner at one of his favorite local restaurants. He was also a dedicated University of Colorado football fan who enjoyed traveling to Nebraska to meet friends — even opposing fans — for the rivalry games.

Above all, Tom was a proud and supportive father. Whether coaching William on the football and baseball fields or taking Alex to 6 a.m. ice skating practices, he always encouraged his children to pursue what made them happy.

Tom loved meeting new people, discovering dive bars and new restaurants, listening to classic rock and roll music, and being anywhere that was, in his words, “happening.” His outgoing personality, generous spirit, and love of life made him unforgettable to all who knew him.

Tom was loved by many and will be truly missed.

A celebration of the life to be announced at a later date.
