Obituary

Thomas T. Leavitt (Big T) passed away Monday, July 15, 2013, at his home. He was born October 11, 1924, the tenth child of LeRoy H. and Ella Linderman Leavitt. Tom was reared and educated in Ogden City, graduating from Ogden High School. Active in school sports, he acquired a love of baseball and pitched for the Ogden High baseball team. He even held the strike out record while pitching for the American Legion Team. After high school, he participated in spring training with the Cincinnati Reds professional baseball team but was then drafted to WWII. He received many medals including the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. After his discharge from the service, he returned to baseball, pitching for a local semi-pro team for three years. He later played for a number of local fast pitch softball teams and played in nine fast pitch softball world tournaments. Tom married Lynnette Harbertson on March 18, 1948, in the Salt Lake City temple. Together, they had three sons. They later divorced. Tom graduated from Weber College and began working for Aultorest Memorial Corp in 1947. He later attended and graduated from the California College of Mortuary Science. In 1961, he purchased Aultorest and changed the name to Leavitts Chapel of Flowers Mortuary and Memorial Park. Tom touched many lives throughout his career and continued to stay involved with the mortuary even in his later years. He often participated in the services, singing at over 7000 funerals as well as many church and civic events. Tom was a member of the LDS Church and was active in numerous capacities. He was also an active member of the community. He served on multiple boards, committees, foundations and memberships, including The Chamber of Commerce, The 100 Club, Ogden Spikers, Utah Sports Hall of Fame Foundation, and Weber State University Hall of Fame Committee. He also served on the United Fund Campaign, the Cancer and Heart Fund, and the Diabetes Fund. Tom was a past president of the T.O. Smith PTA, past president of the Patio Springs Country Club, past president of the Ogden Golf and Country Club, and past president of the Weber State University Wildcat Club. He was a member of the Air Force Association, the Military Affairs Committee, the Governors Club of Northern Utah, the Ogden Opera Guild, the Utah Symphony Ballet Association, and the Canadian Goose Club and Ducks Unlimited. He served on the St. Benedicts Hospital Foundation, and the board for the Eccles Community Arts Center and Preferred Funeral Directors International. Tom was a member of the National Funeral Directors Association, the Utah Cemetery and American Cemetery Association, and the Utah Funeral Directors Association where he was honored with a Lifetime Service Award. Tom was an avid Weber State fan, skier, tennis player, and golfer. Tom enjoyed his Wednesday golf group for many years. He made his last hole in one at the age of 87. He was often heard singing and telling people he was the luckiest man in the world. Tom is survived by three sons; Tom J. Leavitt, J. Scott Leavitt, and Mike L. Leavitt (fianc Rachel), grandsons, Derek Leavitt and also Ethan and Xander Clark, as well as one sister, Lois Brown, all of Ogden. He is preceded in death by his parents, a granddaughter, Crystal, 2 brothers, Roy and Wayne, and five sisters; Alice, Florence, Ruth, June, and Mary. Special thanks to Karen Anderson, IHC Hospice, Asena Itanehau and Comfort Keepers for their outstanding care during the final months of Toms life. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 23, 2013, at 12:00pm at Leavitts Mortuary and Aultorest Memorial Park, 836 36th Street, Ogden. Friends may visit family Monday evening from 5:00 8:00pm and from 10:00 11:45am prior to services. Interment: Leavitts Aultorest Memorial Park.
