Together Again
As they shared their lives together, they chose to share their final farewell together.
They lived a happy, interesting and full life, choosing to live in Ogden, Utah after the end of WWII. They had four children and three generations of grandchildren. In their early years, they were active in Ogdens First Presbyterian Church, accepting many leadership responsibilities. In the 1960s they opened Virgs Sport Shop on Riverdale Road. They enjoyed their time together building a cabin near Heber City and entertained family and friends for many years. After retiring, they traveled throughout the United States and volunteered as camp hosts for the U.S. Forest Service. They were avid bowlers and participated in tournaments across the country.
Helen was born in Spanish Fork, Utah. She is remembered for her loving kindness, great sense of humor and devotion to family and friends. She was a creative homemaker and gracious hostess, as well as a master seamstress. She was well known for her artistic abilities. For many years, she served as a hardworking member of the PEO Philanthropic Educational Organization.
Virgil was born in Tingley, Iowa. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1940 and was seriously wounded in the 1942 battle of Guadalcanal. In 1945, while stationed in Clearfield, Utah he was awarded the Purple Heart and met and married Helen.
Virg graduated from Watchmaking School in 1948 and was a skilled, local watchmaker for decades. He was a successful businessman and master gardener who loved sharing his bounty with neighbors, co-workers, family and friends. Virg was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and also belonged to the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion Post 9. After he lost his beloved wife he worked for Wal-Mart as a greeter. It was his delight to volunteer as their Santa Claus for many years. He retired at the age of 90. Virg will always be remembered for his generosity, stories and wit.
Graveside services will be held for Virg and Helen on Saturday, June 3, 2017 at 2:00 PM at Leavitts Mortuary, 836 36th Street, Ogden, Utah.
