Wayne Spencer's Obituary

Ernest Wayne Spencer (Wayne), 86, passed from this life Saturday, July 22, 2017, at the Queen of the Valley Hospital in West Covina, CA from a long-term illness. He was born in Ogden, UT, on November 10, 1930. He was the last surviving child of Ernest Spencer and Della Vaughan and was preceded in death by his sisters, Elaine Griffin and Darlene Hubbard. He attended Ogden High School, and then worked as a brakeman for the Central Pacific Railroad and served in the National Guard prior to serving an honorable two year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Central Atlantic States Mission, a portion of that time, serving as a branch president where he served alongside the Cherokee Indians and grew to love them and tenderly spoke of them throughout his lifetime. He eventually attended Brigham Young University, where he was a member of Sigma Delta Chi and served diligently as a campus editor for the BYU Daily Universe. He received a bachelors degree in the study of journalism. His first job after graduation was in Nevada at The Tahoe Carson Chronicle as a reporter and editor and later worked as an editor for The Ely Daily Times and The Associated Press as a writer. Additionally, a long time employee at Thiokol Corp, he dedicated enormous energy and talents into the companys newsletter, Strategically Speaking, and was recognized as contributing to its great success. When Wayne was able, he enjoyed running, writing, gardening, photography, dancing, music, family activities and nature. The combination of both was very gratifying to him. Hiking trails with loved ones was a common occurrence as well as his riverside walks with his dogs. He found peace and tranquility in a mountain atmosphere. His fondness for nature was expressed in his uniquely crafted rock gardens with specially picked wild flowers, rocks, and shrubbery. Wayne was sealed to Catherine Marie Van De Graaff for time and all eternity in 1963 and through that union had three children; Lisa, Corbin, and Wendi. He was married to Marie for 13 years before she passed away from cancer. Wayne later married his dear life-time companion of 30 years, Penny Milburn, whose first husband, to whom she was also sealed to for time and all eternity, had also passed away in his younger years. Wayne is survived by his wife Penny, and three children from his first wife, Catherine Marie Van De Graaff; Lisa Ann Spencer, Corbin Wayne and Yu Chen Spencer, Wendi Marie & Stephen P. Chamberlain; grandchildren; Spencer J. Morgan, and Harrison J. Chamberlain who is currently serving in the Buenos Aires, Argentina West Mission, Calvin P.
