William Arthur Bill Powell Sr. passed October 27, 2017, at his home in Ogden, Utah, due to natural causes. Bill was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina, on December 31, 1929. His parents were Detroit Wilson Powell and Bennie Naomi Goudelock, both deceased. Bill received his elementary and high school education in Spartanburg, South Carolina, graduating from Spartanburg High School in June 1947. He was a graduate of numerous military technical and management training schools during his twenty-two years of active military service. He graduated from Weber State University with a Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) degree in 1980. He was employed at Spartan Mills and Beaumont Mills after school class hours from 1945 to 1948. Bill enlisted in the US Navy in 1948 as an enlisted volunteer, transferring to the US Navy Active Reserve in 1949. He returned to Spartanburg and employment in the textile trade until enlisting in the US Air Force (USAF) at the outbreak of the Korean police action in 1950. Bill was trained in Air Craft Maintenance at Shephard Air Force Base, Texas and transferred to Wiesbaden Air Base, Germany with the Army of Occupation in 1951. In 1952, Bill was reassigned to Brookley Air Force Base, Mobile, Alabama and undertook training as a Flight Engineer with the Military Air Transport Service (ATS). His assignments as an Air Crew Member took him to many parts of the world in support of the Department of Defense Mission. While serving, Bill earned numerous military campaign and special recognition awards. Upon retirement from the USAF, in December 1970, he received the Air Force Flying Safety award for over 15,000 safe flying hours. He was employed as a Postal Mail Clerk at the main post office in Salt Lake City upon retirement from the Air Force. He often said the post office was the best job he had in his working career. He was employed as a GS 11, Technical Training Specialist at Hill AFB retiring in 1994 with over 24 years as a civilian employee with the Federal Civil Service. He had over 47 years of combined military and civil service. It was at Brookley AFB, Alabama where he met his wife Bettie Jane Little, where she was employed at the base Post Exchange (PX) and later in the Depot Instrument Repair Section. They were married in the Base Chapel on July 3, 1954. The family consists of four children: Patricia (Stan) Busath, SLC, Utah; William A. Artie Jr. (Julie) Powell, Huntsville, UT; Tina Joanne (Bill, deceased) Kamppinen, Omaha, NE; and George Daniel (Ann) Powell, Merritt Island, FL. Bill and Bettie have thirteen grandchildren and thirteen and a half great-grandchildren. Bill and his wife Bettie have lived in the Ogden area since July 24, 1966. His Masonic career began while serving as an Enlisted Air Force Air Advisor with the Wyoming Air Guard in Cheyenne in the 1960s. He was initiated, passed and raised in the Rocky Mountain Lodge # 40, Cheyenne. He is a member of Unity Lodge # 18, in Ogden and a charter member of St. George Lodge # 33, St. George, Utah. His Masonic membership includes the Scottish Rite Bodies in Salt Lake; The Red Cross of Constantine, Bonneville Conclave; Ogden York Rite Bodies; El Kalah Shrine; Ogden Shrine Club; and the Scottish Rite Research Society. He was elected to receive the 33 Degree, Inspector General Honorary at the Scottish Rite Bicentennial Biennial Session in Charleston, South Carolina in October 2001. He served Utah Free Masonry as Grand Master in 2002, the year of the Salt Lake Olympics.
