Obituary

William Harold Smith (Bill or Hal to family and friends), beloved husband and father, passed away on December 26, 2017. He was the son of Samuel David Smith, Sr. and Roberta Edith Steele Smith. Dad was born in Tampa, Florida, on November 2, 1924. He spent his early childhood in Tampa; his parents later moved the family to Abbeville, South Carolina. In 1940, he and his family joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. At age 18, dad was drafted into the U.S. Army. After he was released from service in 1948, he attended Weber College when it was located on 25th street in Ogden. While at college, he met his sweetheart, Priscilla Lorraine Allen (Pat), on a blind date. They married on November 20, 1948. He worked as a telegrapher for the Southern-Pacific Railroad in Nevada and California, and as a journeyman sign-painter in Seattle, Washington, and Helena, Montana. He reenlisted in the Army in 1957, where he developed his career in electronics and radar. He served three hardship tours (without his family) - two to Korea and one to Vietnam. His overseas assignments with his family included 18 months each on Okinawa and in Germany. Dad retired from the Army in 1974 after 26 years of service with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 3. He then went to work for CenTel Telephone in Killeen, Texas. While working there, he earned his teaching certificate in electronics from Central Texas College; then he taught there for several years. In 1984, he and mom moved to Ogden, Utah, where he taught at Ogden-Weber Applied Technology College. He then retired from teaching. While in college, dad enjoyed playing football and practicing in gymnastics and was an all-around gifted athlete. Later in life, he took up golf and became very proficient at the game, even making two holes-in-one! He loved to be of service to his family and friends. He was a real handyman, able to repair or build just about anything. He loved his vehicles and could often be found underneath his old pickup truck or one of his cars, sometimes forgetting to put on his coveralls, to his wifes chagrin! Dad was a putterer and was always busy doing something useful. He was a great example to his family of industry and service. Dad served in several callings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, which he fulfilled with dedication. On December 21, 2007, he and mom were sealed for time and all eternity in the Ogden Temple. He was a kind, generous and caring man who always was concerned about helping others. He will be sorely missed! Dad is survived by his wife, Priscilla Lorraine Allen Smith; sisters, Fleda Smith, Julia Petty, and Patricia Blau; brothers, Martin Smith and Peter Jerome Smith; children, Brien (Linda) Smith, Carrie Smith Hare, Peggy (Chuck) Smith Turner, Paul (Arlee) Smith, Becky (David) Smith Wagner, Fran (Joel) Smith Nowland, and Mark (Shauna) Smith; 29 grandchildren, and 25 great-grandchildren. We love you dad! Services will be held at Burch Creek 5th Ward, 4955 Adams Ave, South Ogden on Saturday, December 30, 2017, at 2:00 p.m., with a viewing prior to services at 1:00 p.m. Arrangements under the direction of Leavitts Mortuary.
